Why using an EV charger for an e-bike is dangerous: a Shanghai fire exposes adapter risks
A Shanghai parking fire shows that a plug fitting does not make EV charging equipment electrically compatible with an e-bike battery.
Media-based report · see original reporting below

Key points
- Investigators linked the September 21 fire in Shanghai’s Fengxian District to an adapter used to charge an e-bike from an EV charger.
- CCTV said some so-called charging gadgets lack safety certification and protection mechanisms.
- Voltage, current, communication and protection requirements must match; a physical connection alone is not evidence of safety.
Reported details
IT Home, citing CCTV News on October 26, reported that a parking-area fire broke out in Shanghai’s Fengxian District at about 9 p.m. on September 21. Charging equipment and an e-bike were damaged or destroyed, but nobody was injured. Investigators said a resident had connected an adapter to an EV charger to charge the e-bike, and an electrical-line fault occurred during charging.
The boundary matters: the investigation addressed this incident and its wiring. It does not show that every charger, e-bike or adapter will catch fire. It does show why a connector that fits cannot prove compatibility among voltage, current, communications and fault protection.
CCTV warned that some products marketed as e-bike charging gadgets have no safety certification or protection mechanism. It advised riders to use dedicated non-motor-vehicle charging areas and compatible equipment, and not to charge e-bikes or batteries indoors or through improvised extension wiring.
Owners and property managers should also watch for unauthorized wiring, overload, failed protection devices, damaged cables and mixed use of charging zones. Unusual heat, odour or repeated tripping calls for immediate shutdown and inspection by the operator or a qualified electrician, not repeated energizing.
Editorial interpretation
Editorial analysis: buyers should verify rated voltage and current, supported equipment, communication protocol, leakage and overcurrent protection, thermal monitoring and certification. The CC0 image by Raysonho is a Canadian V2G-equipment reference, not the Shanghai scene or the adapter involved.
