BEV vs EREV vs PHEV: powertrains explained
Choose how you will charge before choosing a powertrain.
Battery electric
The battery supplies the motors. There is no combustion engine for propulsion. Reliable daily charging makes ownership easier.
Extended-range electric
The wheels are driven by electric motors; an engine generates electricity when needed. Check electric-only range, depleted-battery fuel use and servicing of both systems.
Plug-in hybrid
A rechargeable battery and engine share the work. The engine-to-wheel connection varies by architecture. Regular charging helps short trips use electricity.
Make charging part of the shortlist.
A matching plug shape or an adapter does not guarantee compatibility. Check GB/T, Type 2, CCS or NACS/J3400 interfaces and demonstrate AC and DC sessions on the local networks you will use.
Range needs context.
CLTC, WLTC, WLTP and EPA are different test cycles. Do not use a fixed conversion factor. Compare electric-only range separately from fuel-assisted combined range.
